Meet the Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest winner

Glori Spriggs didn’t have far to go to compete in the 46th Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

Spriggs, from nearby Henderson, was in fact the only finalist in the contest from Nevada, and made the state proud by earning the $1 million grand prize for her Loaded Potato Pinwheels.

Padma Lakshmi announced Spriggs’ name during the awards ceremony last night, sending a deluge of confetti onto the stage.

In a news conference right after the announcement last night, Spriggs was clearly still soaking in her win.

“It’s just amazing,” Spriggs said. “I’ve entered the Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest before, but my recipe was not selected. This is the only contest I’ve ever entered.”

She estimated that she made about 20 or 25 versions of her recipe before settling on the right combination to submit to Pillsbury.

She said her recipe was inspired by Green Giant Seasoned Steamers Frozen Backyard Grilled Potatoes, as she searched for an easy appetizer.

Spriggs said she’s always enjoyed cooking for her family and friends.

As for her winnings, she plans to tell her daughter to quit one of her two jobs. She also wants to take her mother on a riverboat cruise. And, she’s going to give her daughter her car, and buy herself a new car “with a back-up camera on it!”

She also joked about the dress she was wearing, which she recently bought. “My daughter said ‘Do you think that’s the dress you want to wear when you win a million dollars?’” Spriggs said, “Now when she comes back today I’m going to remind her, ‘Yes it is!’”

Spriggs will appear on The Queen Latifah Show on Thursday.

Second prize in the 46th Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest went to Sheila Suhan of Scottdale, Pa., whose recipe was Easy Caprese Pizza Bake.
