Move over Silicon Valley

While Silicon Valley may be what first comes to mind when you think of a place to build a career in Information Technology, we think that the city of Golden Valley, Minnesota – where General Mills’ world headquarters is based – is gaining some attention today as a hot spot for IT professionals.

Computerworld magazine has announced its annual Best Places to Work in IT list.

This year General Mills ranks as the third best place to work in IT in the United States. The company has made this list for 13 years and has ranked in the top ten for the past five.

We spoke with Julie Lockhart, a manager of IS in our consumer internet applications department, to get the inside scoop on her career.

Julie’s been with General Mills for 13 years and started with us right after graduating from Iowa State University where she majored in Management Information Systems.

Her many jobs at General Mills have included some time as a programmer, analyst, project manager, and department manager working with areas like Supply Chain, Finance, Human Resources and Marketing.

Julie told us – in this video – what, in her opinion, makes General Mills attractive for IT professionals.

Julie and her team support websites like BettyCrocker.com and Pillsbury.com.

And she says she’s particularly proud of her team’s efforts to improve the performance of our websites for visitors.
