350,000 Yoplait lids

The Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA) fraternity takes Yoplait’s Save Lids to Save Lives project campaign seriously.

So serious, they set a huge goal this year of collecting another 350,000 yogurt cup lids.

That’s a lot of yogurt!

But if anyone can do it, it’s ZTA. Last year, the fraternity’s collegiate and alumni chapters in the U.S. came within a few thousand lids of 350,000.

So, how do they do it?

Well, like most people who support Save Lids to Save Lives, ZTA members simply eat a cup of yogurt and save the lid. Or, they collect the lids from donation boxes in their communities.

But ZTA also has a few creative ways to bring in big numbers.

Can you say yogurt eating contests?

They also spread the word and collect lids at NFL and college football games, and hand out pink ribbons.

Yoplait sends Susan G. Komen for the Cure 10 cents for every lid. In addition, ZTA receives 5 cents per lid it collects, up to 300,000, for the ZTA Foundation and its Think Pink campaign for breast cancer awareness.

This is the seventh year that ZTA has partnered with Yoplait.

“It’s really taken off on our campuses,” says Nicole Patterson, the director of ZTA Foundation Administration, who coordinates ZTA’s national programs with Yoplait, Komen and the NFL.

In this audio clip, she told me why it makes sense for ZTA and Yoplait to work together.

For its part, Yoplait is thrilled have ZTA’s tremendous support.

“Each year the ZTA Chapters have bought this promotion to their campus in a new way and it is great to see how each campus brings passion to the Save Lids to Save Lives program,” says Stacy Aase, who works closely with ZTA as an integrated communications manager at General Mills.

No matter who saves the yogurt lid, each one that’s collected and mailed in helps Yoplait meet its goal of raising funds for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists. This year, Yoplait increased its maximum donation to $2 million to help fund community breast cancer programs and support women impacted by the disease.

2011 marks the 13th year that Yoplait cups and lids have turned pink in support of the fight against breast cancer. More information can be found on Yoplait.com.

This year, lids can also be redeemed online, and through the mail. Also, each pink Yoplait lid redeemed will be tracked by zip code, so that funds generated through local lid collection go back to fund breast cancer programs in the same community.

All that is sure to keep Nicole and ZTA busy counting lids, at least for a little while.
