General Mills advances reputation for great leaders

Today FORTUNE revealed its biennial Global Top Companies for Leaders list on, ranking General Mills second in what it describes as “the most comprehensive study of organizational leadership in the world.”

This award comes on the heels of last month’s recognition by Leadership Excellence magazine, which ranked General Mills first in its “Best in Leadership Development” list.

So what makes General Mills stand out when it comes to developing leaders?

According to General Mills Vice President and Chief Learning Officer Kevin Wilde, it’s a commitment to developing talent from within – a strategy that has resulted in long tenures from talented employees who make significant contributions to the business. He also credits the company’s success to its approach of hiring people with great potential and then providing them with challenging assignments, great managers, leadership training and mentoring.


The global study of nearly 500 companies and the resulting list were developed by consultancy firm Aon Hewitt in partnership with The RBL Group and FORTUNE.

Winners were selected and ranked by a panel of independent judges based on the following criteria:

  • Strength of leadership practices and culture
  • Examples of leader development on a global scale
  • Alignment of business and leadership strategy
  • Business performance
  • Company reputation
