Fighting hunger with top chefs

Hunger relief is a cause near and dear to General Mills, especially to the eight employees on the board of Share our Strength Minneapolis.

These women hold a variety of roles within General Mills, and I continue to be inspired by their passion and energy for the cause.

Share our Strength is a national nonprofit organization with the goal of ending childhood hunger in the U.S. through public-private partnerships in cities and states, investing in effective community organizations fighting hunger, and raising public awareness.

In Minnesota, home to General Mills’ headquarters, food insecurity is a growing problem, increasing from 6.9 percent in 1998 to 2000, to 10.3 percent from 2008 to 2010 — a 49 percent increase in 10 years.

I have been a member of the fundraising board for the last three years and could not be prouder of the work that we have done to raise money in the Twin Cities.

Share our Strength Minneapolis has a long tradition with General Mills, as its original board was formed with the support of two employees.

We partner with the local restaurant community to create culinary events that raise needed funds and awareness for child hunger issues in Minnesota. We host three events a year: Cakewalk – a night of drinks and desserts; Hotlist – small plates and drinks; and our flagship, Taste of the Nation – a five plus course dinner with drink pairings prepared tableside by the Twin Cities’ best chefs.

I can’t think of a more delicious way to support an incredibly important cause.

Since 1988, we have raised nearly $2 million to end child hunger in Minnesota. This money has gone to a variety of recipients including Second Harvest Heartland, Minnesota Food Share, and Cooking Matters, a Share Our Strength program that teaches low-income families how to cook healthy meals on a limited budget.

Taste of the Nation Minneapolis is on September 30, 2012, at the Graves 601 hotel.

We have 18 chefs this year, including: Restaurant Alma, Bradstreet Craftshouse, Cosmos, La Belle Vie, Heidi’s, Masu, Minneapolis Club, Mystic Lake, Sea Change, Travail, Victory 44, Forepaughs, Bewiched/Icehouse,Gather, Strip Club Meat and Fish, Union, Sanctuary and more.
