Dozens of innovations debuting in New Year

Forget sugar-plums. After tasting our lineup of new product innovation, I’m more likely to have visions of chocolate and peanut butter granola bars dancing in my head.

Peanut butter and chocolate, along with fiber and protein, continue to be on trend with consumers and make repeat appearances in our lineup of new product innovation for the New Year.

Today in a meeting with investors, General Mills executives will announce the company’s new product innovation plans for the second half of its fiscal year.

In addition to on-trend flavors, General Mills continues to see growth opportunities in the better-for-you snacking category. More and more people now think of snacks as a way to regulate energy levels and seek specific ingredients such as fiber, protein, and whole grains.

This January General Mills will launch various better-for-you snacking options that appeal to this segment of consumers including Fiber One Protein bars, Green Giant Veggie Chips, Yoplait Greek 100 in Lemon and Tropical Fruit flavors, Cascadian Farm Crunchy Granola bars and LÄRABAR Cappuccino, to name a few.

General Mills will launch more than 100 products in its U.S. Retail portfolio alone in Fiscal 2013.

Below I’ve provided a preview of a dozen of the new products that will be flowing into the marketplace soon.

Fiber One Protein bars’ two indulgent flavors – Caramel Nut and Coconut Almond – are on trend with consumers’ desire for “permissive indulgence” in snacking and offer a bar that tastes as good as a candy bar but with the nutritional benefits of fiber and protein. Fiber One Protein bars contain 20 percent of the Daily Value of fiber and six or seven grams of protein in each bar.


Green Giant Veggie Chips – Green Giant, a brand best known for great-tasting frozen and canned corn, peas and other vegetables will make its debut in the salty snacks category this January with the introduction of two veggie-based snack chips –Green Giant Sweet Potato Multigrain Chips with sea salt and Roasted Veggie Tortilla Chips with a zesty cheddar-flavor.

Totino’s Pizzeria Rolls – This new expansion for the Totino’s brand brings popular Italian menu favorites into bite size rolls. The three flavors of Totino’s Pizzeria Rolls –Chicken Parmesan, Meatball Marinara and Cheesy Garlic – will arrive on store shelves in mid-January, just in time to appear on the menu of football parties. The snacks can be microwaved for convenience or baked in the oven, and come in 40 count bags.


General Mills is launching a new twist on America’s favorite cereal with Honey Nut Cheerios Medley Crunch. This tasty cereal combines Honey Nut Cheerios O’s, crunchy clusters, and crispy wheat flakes, and delivers 16 grams of whole grain in each serving.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal fans will be excited to see Peanut Butter Toast Crunch this winter. The cereal combines the lightly toasted crispy squares fans love with real peanut butter. The cereal has 11 grams of whole gain per serving and is a good source of calcium.

Fiber One 80 Calories Chocolate cereal was developed to appeal to consumers who are looking to manage their weight without sacrificing great taste. Fiber One 80 Calories Chocolate has 35 percent of the Daily Value of fiber in each serving.

GoGurt Twisted – A two-color version of the popular GoGurt yogurt in a tube is launching in fun Strawberry Mango Tango and Screamin’ Green Apple flavors. GoGurt Twisted contains 10 percent of the Daily Value of calcium and vitamin D, 70 calories per serving, and no high fructose corn syrup.

Yoplait Greek 100 – This popular line of 100-calorie Greek yogurt is adding Tropical Fruit and Lemon flavors.

Yoplait Pro-Force yogurt is a Greek yogurt for kids that contains two times the protein of the leading kids’ yogurt and it’s made with natural flavors and colors. The yogurt was created for “tweens” with active lifestyles and comes in Strawberry Blast and Mixed Berry Burst flavors with vibrant packaging.

Cascadian Farm is launching organic Crunchy Granola Bars in Oats & Honey, Peanut Butter and Oats and Cocoa flavors. Each bar has 9 or fewer ingredients.

LÄRABAR is launching a new Cappuccino flavor. This great tasting bar has just five ingredients – dates, almonds, cashews, fair trade coffee, and vanilla extract.

Chex Mix Muddy Buddies Snickerdoodle – We’re adding more variety to the popular Chex Mix Muddy Buddies line sold in convenience stores in the U.S. with a new Snickerdoodle flavor. Snickerdoodle is a mix of cinnamon and sugar flavors and is the first non-chocolate flavor to join the strong and growing Muddy Buddies line.

Pillsbury Sunrise Flatbread and Pillsbury Mini Muffins are two new delicious options available to K-12 School Foodservice operators.

Recent and upcoming new product launches in General Mills’ International division include:

• Sweet and Nutty bars in the UK in Peanut and Almond flavors

• New Yoplait and Liberté yogurts in Canada

• New varieties of Calin yogurt in France

• Häagen-Dazs Salted Caramel ice cream in France
