Ready for the runway
Since the first Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest in 1949, the official apron for the finalists has been a highly anticipated part of the fun.
In recent years, the apron has gone high fashion as Pillsbury has partnered with well-known designers. But this year’s apron marks the first time fan inspiration has influenced the final look.
Fashion designer Whitney Port created the official 46th Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest apron – the ultimate combination of fashion and function – to be worn by the 100 finalists vying to win, and she did it with a little “pinspiration.”
“Pillsbury fans were invited to help inspire the official contest apron design by pinning their favorite images to a special Pinterest board,” says Shera Balgobin, Bake-Off Contest manager. “Consumers pinned more than 400 pictures of color schemes and patterns alongside photos related to the Pillsbury brand, cooking and Las Vegas (home of this year’s Bake-Off).”
The Bake-Off team then selected a group of pinned images as a “mood board” for designer Whitney Port.
“She then created an original print, something her fashion line, Whitney Eve, is known for, specifically for the contest apron,” says Shera. And the result of this creative collaboration?
“Like fashion and design, which are my creative outlets, many people express their creativity through cooking,” said Port. “I’m honored and excited to partner with the Bake-Off Contest to celebrate the top 100 home cooks who channeled their creative juices to develop such unique and original recipes.”
“Whitney’s fresh take on the classic apron will ensure the contest’s 100 finalists are cooking in style,” says Shera.
Online votes will determine which category finalists will have the change to wear that apron when competing for the $1 million grand prize later this year.
The first group of 33 finalists have already been named, in the first category, “Amazing Doable Dinners.”
If you’re looking for another opportunity to influence this year’s Bake-Off, you can vote for your favorite recipes from second category, “Simple Sweets and Starters,” now through June 27, at BakeOff.com.
After that, there is still time to enter recipes in the final category, “Quick Rise and Shine Breakfasts.” Original recipes may be submitted online at BakeOff.com from July 4 – Aug. 8, 2013 (with online voting Sept. 12 – 26, 2013).
The 46th Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest will take place November 10-12 at Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
