Help build libraries with Join My Village

Today is #GivingTuesday, a day that encourages individuals everywhere to make room for charitable giving as part of their holiday season.

In just two years, #GivingTuesday has grown from a small social media movement to become widely embraced nationally as an ideal complement to “Black Friday” and Cyber Monday,” which focus on traditional gift purchasing.

So for the second year in a row, Join My Village – an international philanthropic program founded by General Mills – is tapping into the magic of #GivingTuesday to make some remarkable things happen in the communities that JMV supports in Africa and India.

Through programs that focus on expanded access to education, health and economic empowerment, Join My Village works year-round with its humanitarian partner, CARE USA, to strengthen impoverished communities in Malawi and India.

Today, powered by a global community of over a half million people around the world, and supported by General Mills and Merck, Join My Village is leveraging #GivingTuesday to build and stock libraries in isolated communities.

Simply by taking a moment to go online and learn about JMV’s work (in this case, the library project), dollars get released from JMV corporate partners into the project.

Each time an individual views the video or shares the project article with their friends, three dollars is released, up to $100,000 total for the library project.

“Through a continuous improvement effort this summer, we were able to free up $100,000 from JMV operating and marketing to be re-directed for additional impact on the ground in these communities,” says Nicola Dixon, associate director of Community Action at General Mills. “After exploring the options with CARE USA, the team chose to build and stock libraries in these two communities, given the ongoing positive impact that they will have in terms of expanding literacy, opportunity and empowerment in these regions.”

Today (#GivingTuesday) through end of December, individuals anywhere can help to make these library builds a reality, simply by learning about the project.

The online actions – view the video, read the article – are by default private. However, the Join My Village website gives individuals the option to share the content with their friends through social media, to accelerate the project.
