11 products make IRI Pacesetters top 100

Eleven General Mills products – including Yoplait Greek 100, Fiber One Protein Bars, Honey Nut Cheerios Medley Crunch and Green Giant Frozen Steamers – were among the top-selling 100 new food products of 2013, according to market research firm Information Resources Inc.’s (IRI) New Product Pacesetters Report.

Yoplait Greek 100 ranked No. 2 in the food and beverage category, behind Dannon Light & Fit Greek.

Fiber One Protein Bars was listed at No. 14, Honey Nut Cheerios Medley Crunch was No. 30 and Green Giant Frozen Steamers were at No. 37.

Fiber One placed four products in the top 100 list. IRI noted that fiber and/or whole grains were the most prevalent ingredients in 42 percent of the year’s Pacesetter foods introduced.

And our Old El Paso Frozen Entrée meals – though not in the top 100 – did make IRI’s list of new “Rising Stars.” The meals were introduced in September 2013 with eight products: Burritos, enchiladas, fajitas and quesadillas with either chicken or beef. In the fall, Old El Paso will add three new varieties to this line-up. They include Chicken Enchiladas Verde, and two bowls: Honey Chipotle Chicken and Carne Asada Steak.

IRI spotted a number of trends among the new products. Seven of the top 10 food and beverage launches – including Yoplait Greek 100 – were “healthier-for-you” products.

The report also notes that today’s food innovators must deliver “convenience plus” – meaning that convenience alone is not enough for success.

It must also taste great or have some other benefit. Two-thirds of early new food and beverage product adopters are on the lookout for new “restaurant-in-the-home” options.
