The Doughboy rises again
A new Pillsbury Doughboy balloon will make its first official flight in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
But thanks to its test launch earlier this month, you’re seeing it first right here.
The Doughboy was one of six new balloons made for the parade to fly at “Balloonfest” on a sunny Saturday, Nov. 8, high above a parking lot at Citi Field.
And I was there to see the Macy’s team unload the balloon, spread it out, inflate it and launch it – all in the course of six hours or so.
Watch this video to see the work it took to make sure the test was a success, to get it ready for the real deal on Thanksgiving.
The giant Doughboy balloon debuted in the parade in 2009 and quickly became a favorite of the crowd along the route, and watching on TV.
“This is the first time I think we’ve ever done this in history where we had such a great balloon design to begin with, that when it was time for a new balloon – the fabric wears out a little bit – we wanted to do exactly the same,” says John Piper, vice president of Macy’s Parade Studio. “It’s a brand new balloon, but it’s the exact same size and shape as the previous design.”
If you’re in Manhattan this Thursday, we’d love to see your photos of the new Doughboy balloon.
Of course, if you can’t get to New York City, remember to watch the parade on NBC (9 a.m. to Noon, in all time zones).
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is in its 88th year.
