New products deliver on taste

As we look forward to turning the page on the calendar to 2015, General Mills is gearing up to launch a strong line-up of tasty new products in the second half of our fiscal year.

How good do these sound?

French Toast Crunch, Nature Valley Nut Crisps in Salted Caramel Peanut, Strawberry Cheesecake Yoplait Greek 100 Whips. These are just a few of the more than 50 new products hitting shelves in January.

I recently spoke with Jeff Harmening, executive vice president and chief operating officer of U.S. Retail, about the new products getting set to appear nationwide from three priority businesses – cereal, yogurt and snacks.

What is the big news in cereal?

Jeff Harmening: “In the first half of the year our biggest innovation by far has been adding more cinnamon to Cinnamon Toast Crunch and consumers absolutely love it. In the second half of the year, one of the things we’re excited about is bringing back French Toast Crunch. Just like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, this product just tastes fantastic. And we’re adding another variety of Cheerios – Ancient Grains – and bringing to market Chex Gluten Free Granola Mix. When we look at the wellness trends and what consumers are looking for, gluten-free remains toward the top of the list and our Chex business has been doing really well.”

 How are we innovating in the yogurt category?

Jeff Harmening: “We have a fantastic new product we think consumers are really going to like – Yoplait Greek 100 Whips. It offers protein with the lightness of a whipped mousse and it tastes phenomenal.”


We have a lot of great new snacks coming out. Why is there such a focus on snacks?

Jeff Harmening: “We focus on snacking because Americans are really changing the way they eat. We are doing a lot more snacking and a lot less sitting down to three meals a day. So it’s certainly an area of growth. And more importantly, consumers are demanding more from their snacks. We have a whole host of products we’re introducing in our better-for-you snacks area. The biggest and best of those is going to be Nature Valley Nut Crisps in flavors like salted caramel peanut.” (Jeff talks about snacking trends, in this video clip).
