Q&A with Michael Phelps
Michael Phelps hasn’t had much chance to relax after returning from Rio. His latest outstanding performances in the pool – and his retirement from swimming – give him a lot to talk about on TV.
But there was something different to his appearance on the TODAY show yesterday.
Wheaties teamed with TODAY and hosts Savannah Guthrie and Carson Daly to present Phelps with a special honor, the brand’s first-ever Lifetime Achievement box.
You can learn more about it, and see their interview, in this post.
We met Phelps before the show, along with his fiancée, Nicole Johnson and their son Boomer, now 16 weeks old.
And we watched, behind-the-scenes, as Phelps was in the TODAY studio for his interview segment. There was definitely a sense of history to the moment, for both Phelps and for us at General Mills and the Wheaties team.
Later, in this interview with us backstage, Phelps talked about his connection to Wheaties and his feelings about the Lifetime Achievement box.
Phelps told us his third Wheaties box, at the end of his career, perhaps carries more meaning than the first two. We could tell by the way he looked at it backstage at TODAY.
“I think this time around I’ve been able to have some things set in,” Phelps told us. “Knowing that I’ll never swim competitively again is wild to think about. But I’m so happy with everything that has gone on with my career … I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”
Boomer and Nicole have a lot to do with that.
Phelps also told us he’s looking forward to sharing stories with Boomer, once he’s old enough, about his swimming performances and Wheaties boxes.
“To be able to have him watch and be a part of my last race, that will be something that I’ll have forever,” he said.
The Michael Phelps Lifetime Achievement Wheaties box will appear in stores across the U.S. later this fall.
