Top family summer activity and snack trends
How is your family spending the summer?
Parents contacted for a survey from General Mills and Box Tops for Education said they are most interested in simple, outdoor activities and unexpected road trips. And, the right mix of snacks and fun in the sun.
Backyard barbecues (50 percent) and picnics (34 percent) were the most popular family activity cited this summer in the survey. Those are followed by road trips or vacations (18 percent) and sporting events (15 percent).
Two in three parents indicate they plan to vacation or take a road trip, and most say they will become a tourist in their own city, traveling close to home.
America’s favorite snacks vary from coast-to-coast. The survey found that granola and protein bars are the most popular snacks in the Northeast (24 percent). Consumers in the South said they like to snack the most on chips, popcorn, crackers and pretzels (30 percent). Midwest and West snackers are opting for veggies and fruit (27 percent).
With the start of school just a few weeks away, it’s a good time to remind you that you’ll find Box Tops for Education on many of your favorite foods. The list includes Nature Valley granola bars, Annie’s Organic snacks, Chex Mix, Yoplait Go-Gurt and most Big G cereals. Box Tops also can be found on products from Ziploc, Kleenex, Reynolds, Lysol and more.
For every valid Box Top collected and submitted, schools receive ten cents in funding to support basic operating needs and programs that might not be possible otherwise. These needs include field trips, textbooks, musical instruments, playground equipment, classroom technology, arts, cultural programming and more.
K-8 schools in the U.S. have earned more than $840 million through the Box Tops for Education program since it started in 1996, with more than 70,000 schools participating last year.

Editor’s note: Morning Consult, on behalf of General Mills, conducted the online survey of 834 mothers ages 30-45 with children ages 5-13 from June 24-27, 2017. Results from the full survey have a margin of error of +/- 2 percent.
