Betty Crocker sets a Mug Cake record
Our Betty Crocker team in Saudi Arabia celebrated the country’s 88th National Day in a record-breaking way.
The brand teamed up with Panda Retail Company, the leading grocer in the region, to create a 112 square meter Mug Cake on Saturday, using 19,600 Betty Crocker Mug Cake packs and 1,960 kilograms of frosting. It took almost eight hours to set it up.
When it was complete, it set a new Guinness World Records title for the largest Mug Cake mosaic. The event took place at Al Andalus Mall in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
“Betty Crocker is well-loved in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, so we decided to launch a campaign to promote our Mug Cakes, for Saudi National Day, called, “My Mug, My Cake, My Dream,” says Ali Shaikh, commercial director for the Middle East & Africa business for General Mills. “That became the inspiration for us to create a mosaic celebrating the dreams of young Saudis.”
While Betty Crocker Mug Cakes are all about making single-serve indulgent desserts quickly, the process for getting into the Guinness World Records wasn’t as quick and easy. Thirty bakers spent more than 24 hours creating and decorating the massive cake to resemble the Saudi 88th National Day design.
After the record was confirmed by a Guinness World Records representative on site, the brand team made sure that the desserts weren’t wasted. They distributed the mugs to visitors at the mall, and to the non-profit organization, Saudi Food Bank.
This is the second consecutive year Betty Crocker Arabia earned a Guinness World Records title. Last year, the brand was responsible for baking the largest marble cake to date. Read about that 16-square-meter, 733 kg cake, in this blog post.
